World Class Tests were launched in 2001 by the British Government's Department for Education and Skills for assessing and nurturing gifted youngsters. It is an international benchmark for Mathematics and Problem Solving. The questions in the tests are designed by professors of renowned universities in the UK, USA and Australia.
The Tests were first introduced in Hong Kong in 2004, and since then, around 25,000 students from about 400 schools have taken the tests. In 2008 HKUST was commissioned to promote and administer the tests in the Asian region.
World Class Tests are organized throughout the world in April and November each year, and the results announced today are of the November 2008 tests conducted on HKUST campus and at various school test sites in Hong Kong, in which over 2,280 youngsters took part in over 4,000 tests. Among them, about 500 came from places outside Hong Kong, including Beijing, Foshan, Shenzhen, Macau and Taiwan.
For the 8 to 11 age group, 1,736 students (male 1,152, female 584) took the Mathematics paper, and 853 students (male 595, female 258) took the Problem Solving paper. For the 12 to 14 age group, 312 students (male 242, female 70) took the Mathematics paper, and 195 students (male 151, female 44) took the Problem Solving Paper.
