A total of 133 students from primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and the Mainland received gold awards in the Elite Competition where the 523 best-performing students among the 3,800 students taking part in the April 2008 and November 2008 World Class Tests were invited to compete.

From these gold award winners, 6 will be selected and granted scholarships for summer programs for gifted youngsters this summer.

These programs were the summer program jointly organized by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth; and the summer program offered by Imperial College, London.

The Elite Competition was held on 14 February 2009 at HKUST, which has been commissioned to promote and administer the Tests in the Asian Region since 2008.

World Class Tests were launched in 2001 by the British Government's Department for Education and Skills for assessing and nurturing gifted youngsters. It is an international benchmark for Mathematics and Problem Solving. The Tests are organized throughout the world in April and November each year, and the questions are designed by professors of renowned universities in the UK, USA and Australia.

The Tests were first introduced in Hong Kong in 2004, and since then, around 25,000 students from about 400 schools have taken the tests. Apart from students from Hong Kong, students from other areas such as Beijing, Foshan, Shenzhen, Macau and Taiwan have taken part in the Tests.
