Results of an international talent test in mathematics and problem solving, World Class Tests, announced today found over 30 percent of Hong Kong of them are among the top in mathematics over the world. Among the students sitting for the Test, a 10-year-old pupil has been named as the youngest student attaining distinction in mathematics in the senior age group since the Test launched in Hong Kong in 2004.
World Class Tests, a worldwide initiative devised by the Qualifications Curriculum Authority of the British Government's Department for Education and Skills since 2001 to identify and assess gifted students aged from 8 to 14 in the top 10 per cent ability range in the areas of mathematics and or problem solving. Since its introduction to Hong Kong in 2004, World Class Tests has attracted 10,000 seats of students from 215 primary schools and 57 secondary schools territory-wide, representing more than 30 percent of primary schools and 10.percent of secondary schools.
Results of World Class Tests in April showed a staggering 35 percent of students aged from 8 to 11 attaining a distinction in the mathematics test while the passing rate is as high as 80 percent. Hong Kong students' remarkable performance prevails in the senior category, with 75 percent passed the mathematics tests, of which 31 percent awarded a distinction.
Similar to the test results in previous tests, there were 75 percent entries passing the test of problem-solving skills, of which 11 percent and 16.7 percent achieved distinction in junior and senior age groups respectively.
Speaking at the press conference, Mr. Lau Ming Ki, Academic Officer of Hong Kong Aided Primary School Heads Association, Vice Chairman of the Association of World Class Maths & Principal of Yuen Long Wai Chow School (Long Ping Estate) said, "after analyzing the test results throughout the years, we find that Hong Kong students are generally better in spatial while less competent in handling data when they take the mathematics test."
"In regard to the problem-solving skills, they shine in the questions about selection, evaluation and recommendation while there is room for improvement when it comes to questions requiring them to translate, interpret and re-interpret."
It is encouraging to note that Lin Chuk Yin, the primary-five student of Diocesan Boys' School Primary Division not only attained double distinctions in the junior age group, he also challenged himself against the mathematics questions in the age group of 12-14 and achieved a distinction. Lin was named the youngest student attaining distinction in senior age group since the launch of the World Class Tests.
"World Class Tests has been held in Hong Kong for the seven times since 2004. We are glad to see the well-received response to the test. The numbers of participants had grown ten folds, from 1,000 seats in the first test to more than 10,000 seats of students now. We learned a very positive feedback from both students and parents and they all agree that the questions are very challenging and stimulating. While World Class Tests in November is now calling for application, we are confident that the number of enrolment will reach a record high this year. The next World Class Tests will be held in November, it's opened to enrol now," said Mr. Kwok Tin-ming, CEO of Trumptech (HK) Limited, organizer of World Class Tests in Asia.
Congratulation!! St. Francis Of Assisi's English Primary School achieved the Most Outstanding Performance Awards in both Mathematics and Problem Solving.
